I Just Want To Be Clear About This T-Shirt and Go Local Giveaway

Growing Up AustinAustin Go Local

There is a rumor about blogs that comments had better be good. You can’t go around leaving lazy comments because they don’t add to the conversation and they probably won’t even get approved. I feel this way when I think about commenting on a great post on a popular blog and there are 645 comments already that are all clever in their own right and worthy of a separate blog post in itself, maybe even an essay or a book. And not to mention names (Wendi Aarons), but I just lurk around her blog and don’t say a thing because I can’t compete with her commenters.

There is a truth in that, especially when you are a blogger and you want to convince readers to click the link to your own blog. But, there is another reason to comment. You can comment just to say, “Hey, that was cool.”

The bloggers with 645 comments per post probably already know that, but for bloggers with slightly fewer comments, they might like the encouragement. For Growing Up Austin, I would like to be clear about this and say that you don’t have to be clever or funny or “add to the conversation.” You can say “Hey, that was cool” or just “Hey” if you are in a hurry.

It means a lot to me to know you are out there and you liked a post.

So, in honor of commenting, I’m going to give away Growing Up Austin t-shirts and Go Local cards. For every comment that happens on any post from now until midnight Wednesday, November 16th, you will get one entry into the giveaway. Then I will randomly choose three names to receive a GrowingUpAustin.com t-shirt and Go Local discount card.

So comment away on any post, you can comment a hundred times if you want (whole words, please). And after the giveaway ends, if you read something you like, remember that I LOVE comments, any comment.

Just so we are clear about this, in case you heard the rumors.

  2. Wait, how and why did that “Katie recently posted…” thing get there? I didn’t write that and I didn’t ID myself that I knew of, other than to give my email address in order to be able to comment. ?

It is a CommentLuv feature. When one blogger writes a comment on another blog, it includes the link to their latest post. If you gave an email address only and not a web site, I don’t know how it knows this. (Hmmmm…) It is cool if you read blog comments, it give more info about a commenter and might encourage folks to link to your blog. Does it freak you out or do you like it?

  9. Comment comment comment words words words words. Ha! Just kidding. What a fun giveaway!

I feel the same way about commenting on blogs with lots of witty comments. I just can’t compete. Although I do a little happy dance with Wendi replies to my comments.

  10. Totally relate with your sentiment. I am always really excited about the readers on my blog who want to make a comment. To me, a comment means the reader connected enough with the post to have their own sentiment or opinion about what I wrote about. And further, it means they thought about what I wrote enough to want to participate in the conversation!

I think we want the people who read us to be affected by our writing – we want it to make a difference in how they experience the world. Commenting is one way they show us that this did indeed occur.

Yeah, I agree. Blogging is a lonely art (can I call it “art”?), sitting at the computer by yourself without seeing people react to your work. Comments are one way to feel more of a connection.

    Thanks for the comment!

Oh, my, I just tried to comment, but had some kind of comment-block. I’m going to stick with it, though, and get a comment out of me sometime soon.
